My statement on NEA and ADL

To the Editor,

I am writing to express my profound concern and disappointment over the National Education Association’s reported consideration of cutting ties with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). At a time when antisemitism is surging at alarming rates both in the United States and globally, abandoning a leading civil rights organization like the ADL sends a dangerous and deeply troubling message.

The ADL has been a cornerstone in the fight against hate, bigotry, and extremism for over a century. It has consistently provided invaluable resources to educators, including anti-bias training and materials that foster inclusive learning environments. For the NEA—a union that claims to champion diversity, inclusion, and the protection of all students—to even entertain severing its relationship with an organization dedicated to combating hate is not only counterproductive, it is morally indefensible.

While disagreement over political issues is inevitable, especially when it comes to complex international matters, punishing an organization for its stance on such matters—particularly one with a long and distinguished record of fighting discrimination—undermines the shared goals of tolerance and equity in education. If the NEA proceeds with this decision, it risks alienating Jewish educators, students, and families who already feel vulnerable.

I urge the NEA leadership to reconsider this misguided move and to reaffirm its commitment to standing against all forms of hate, including antisemitism. Now more than ever, we need solidarity—not division—among those fighting for justice and inclusion.

Sincerely,
Mali Brodt
